The best known of his successors was Anthony Heinsius, who held the office from 1688 to his death in 1720. “The Grand Pensionary” probably refers to Johan de Witt, who was the Grand Pensionary from 1653 to 1672. He was known as a great advocate for the Dutch Republic, and he was also one of the foremost European statesmen of the 17th century. His dramatic and gruesome death became legendary.

In 1709 the grand pensionary Anthonie Heinsius ( 1641 1720 ) secured his election as one of the pastors of the Walloon church at The Hague, intending to employ him mainly in civil affairs. From 1653–1672 Johan de Witt, re-elected twice, made the name of grand pensionary of Holland forever famous during the time of the wars with England.
