Oct 19, 2020 @ 12:00pm Safe Duna Aerobraking Altitude I have a crewed lander that is going to duna According to the KSP wiki page for Jool (http://wiki.kerbalspaceprogram.com/wiki/Jool), a heat shield is needed to aerobrake from Kerbin to Jool. It also suggests diving as deep as 155 km altitude over Jool for that particular aerobrake maneuver. My Jool missions haven't used aerobraking, and have landed 3 bases so far rather nicely. Aerobraking is a spaceflight technique wherein an orbiting spacecraft brushes against the top of a planetary atmosphere. The friction of the atmosphere against the surface of the spacecraft slows down and lowers the craft's orbital altitude.

(Delta-V or the ability you have to change your velocity.) If you have tons of Δv, you can actually come to a stop (zero orbital speed) and drift/fall straight down into Kerbin's atmo. (I've done this to test landers before). This results in the lest amount of heat generated.
